At a moment when AI provokes as much unease as possibility, I chose to test its emerging capabilities as a curatorial tool. The process was challenging and time-consuming, but designing a fictitious two-room gallery offered a satisfying way to bring together quirky, unsettling works especially suited to a season of masks, spirits, and altered realities. Through scale, placement, sightlines, and atmosphere, this virtual gallery reveals how I see these five artists’ works engaging one another across periods and media. The artworks within the gallery renderings are interpretive representations; accurate images and details of the actual works appear in the tiles below.

A Curious State of Being is an online exhibition of five artists that spans nearly a century of image making. It moves from vintage trick photography to contemporary street photography, 3D collaged masks, fantastical pen-and-ink drawings, whimsical bronze sculptures, and an unforgettable dance performance. Despite vast differences in period and medium, each artist destabilized the human figure with wit, visual sleight of hand, performance, and a touch of the unexpected. Heads disappear, fces become masks, bodies detach and transform, and photography no longer behaves as a reliable evidence of reality. Together, these authentic works invite us into a surreal dreamscape where the peculiar co-exist with curiosity and wit.
