Shilo Ratner

Shilo received her MFA in Painting at Academy of Art University in San Francisco and a BA in Design from Curry College in Milton, Massachusetts.

“My paintings and drawings create a quiet and reflective tension between flat planes and figures that transcend physical space but hold an introspective presence. By hybridizing my foundation as a painter in both the Bay Area Figurative Movement and the chiaroscuro tradition of the old masters, the figures in my work carry an ethereal nature, defying physical properties of matter with the quick almost analog brushstrokes often along side colorful strokes of paint that revive them to connect with their universal surroundings. By exploring the separation of the self, alone or in the presence of another, I try to questions a way to look beyond our drive to be connected and start connecting with ourselves outside of assumed social constructs.”
