We are pleased to announce that Sharon Butler will jury a show curated from our Open Call. The show will run January 12 – February 16, 2020. A painter and arts writer, Sharon Butler is widely known as the founder of Two Coats of Paint, a project which includes an online art journal, an artist residency, and many other initiatives. The journal has been sponsored by numerous arts organizations including the Creative Capital Warhol Foundation Art Writers Program, and for the past two years has additionally been supported by reader contributions and advertising revenue. In 2015 and 2018, Sharon was a resident at Yaddo, and was also the inaugural artist-in-residence at Counterproof Press. She has shown work nationally and internationally, has been included in NADA New York and Pulse Miami. Sharon is affiliated with Theodore: Art in Brooklyn and SEASON in Seattle. In 2016 and 2018, her exhibitions at Theodore: Art in Bushwick were selected as a Critic's Picks in Time Out New York and New York Magazine. This coming academic year she will be teaching at Cornell University and the New York Academy of Art.

Her new paintings are based on a series of digital drawings that she made in a phone application and has posted on Instagram each day.

Open Call 2020

ECOCA is excited to announce Open Call 2020. Artists of all backgrounds and working across disciplines are invited to submit their work for consideration in our 2020 programming, including online, solo, pop-up, and group exhibitions, as well as off-site exhibitions at Perspectives Gallery @ Whitney Center.

New York City-based artist and writer Sharon Butler will be curating an exhibition from the Open Call 2020 submissions scheduled for January 12 – February 16, 2020.

The Ely Center of Contemporary Art is based in New Haven, CT at 51 Trumbull St.

Eligibility & Terms
 > Artists of all backgrounds and working in all media are welcome to apply
 > All artwork submitted must be ready to hang or install
 > Artists will be responsible for hand-delivery of artwork
 > We do not ship work**
 > Works in new media, film, or video will also be considered
 > Equipment is limited, supplemental equipment welcome
 > Artists may submit up to five works


Shipping arrangements for work outside of a one hundred mile radius of New Haven, CT will be considered. This radius is illustrated by the map below. Please indicate your intention to ship on the application form. If you are shipping, you are required to provide a pre-paid shipping label for return. Please take note that we will reuse the packing materials provided. The gallery is not responsible for artwork packed or in transit.

Application Fee

Please note that once you submit the $35 application fee, you will receive one email confirming your (1) purchase and (2) with a digital download link to the application form where you will be prompted for more information and to upload your files:

> Name ALL the files with your first initial, full last name, and a number.
> 5 images, each must be less than 5 MB , in jpg or png format
> A CV / Bio as a pdf
> Artist statement as a pdf
